KWLS Announces Scholarships for Writers, Teachers, Librarians
A decade ago, the Key West Literary Seminar began offering financial assistance to individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend the Seminar. Last year, three new scholarships were introduced to recognize excellence from new and emerging writers. Through the generosity of Joyce Johnson, The Dogwood Foundation, and The Rodel Charitable Foundation-Florida, these scholarships are once again available. The Joyce Horton Johnson Fiction Award, the Scotti Merrill Scholarship, and the Marianne Russo Scholarship each provide full tuition for either session of the 2009 Seminar and the writer's workshop program. In addition, these scholarships may provide support for travel, lodging, and living expenses while in Key West and an opportunity to appear on stage at the Seminar. This year we are especially interested in supporting writers of historical fiction.
The Seminar recognizes the paramount role played by teachers and librarians in nurturing readers of all ages, and realizes that Key West in January is not an inexpensive destination, especially for those on a teacher's salary. The Judy Blume/Kids Fund has again made it possible to offer financial assistance to librarians and teachers to attend either Seminar session.
In addition, the Seminar continues to offer a limited amount of financial assistance available to writers who would otherwise not be able to attend the Seminar or writers' workshop program.

One of last year's scholarship winners, Kristen-Paige Madonia, was subsequently awarded a residency at The Studios of Key West. You can read an interview with her here. Another scholarship winner, Dustin Brookshire, has just launched Limp Wrist, an online literary journal. Issue No. 1 features the work of Dara Wier, a KWLS Workshop instructor for many years.
Littoral is the year-round online voice of the Key West Literary Seminar. We write about literature, about Key West, and especially about the authors who have been or will be part of our annual Seminar. Throughout the year on Littoral, you'll find podcasts from our growing audio archives, interviews, book reviews, news about the Seminar, links, commentary, and arcana.
