Hanns Ebensten is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society who, in
addition to having operated the first tourist expeditions to Easter
Island, has pioneered tours to view the seals on the icepack in Canada's
frozen Gulf of St. Lawrence and into the remote Vilcabamba and
Chachapoyas regions of Peru.
In 1972, Hanns Ebensten led a whitewater rafting trip down the Grand Canyon for gay men, setting in motion what would soon become a multi-million dollar industry. His company was the first ever to advertise openly gay trips. Ebensten was also the first to lead a group of tourists to Easter Island. When not hiking in the Andes and through tropical could forests, staying with the Bedouins in the Sinai or with the monks at the theocratic republic of Mount Athos, or crossing Easter Island on horseback, he lives in Key West. His books include Trespassers On Easter Island, Volleyball with the Cuna Indians, and The Seals on the Icepack.
