KENT HARUF grew up in Northeastern Colorado on the high plains, the third of four children. His father was a Methodist preacher and the family moved frequently. He earned his undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and went on to serve as an English teacher for the Peace Corps in Turkey. He later accepted a fellowship to study at the Iowa Writers Workshop. Each job allowed him to hone his writing skills. He was forty-one when his writing was first published.
Kent Haruf and his first wife have three daughters. He has been married to his second wife, Cathy, for three years. They live in Illinois during the school year and in Colorado during the summer.
