40th annual Key West Literary Seminar

This year’s Seminar marks our 40th year of creating world-class literary programming in this subtropical island city. To commemorate the occasion, we’re bringing together what may be our most accomplished roster yet, for a one-of-a-kind event celebrating Black literature in America.

This 40th Seminar’s “singing” of America takes inspiration from Walt Whitman’s “I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear”; from Langston Hughes’ ardent response — “I, too, sing America”; and from that great anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which calls us to “the faith that the dark past has taught us” and “the hope that the present has brought us.” Also joining our stage as special musical guests will be Florida Memorial University’s Ambassador Chorale, a 40-member vocal group from South Florida’s only historically Black university.

Please, join us in Key West this January for this historic gathering.
